At Least 10 Still Detained
In June and July 2023, a series of arrests of Christians took place in Iran, spanning over 11 cities, resulting in at least 69 confirmed detentions, as reported by Article 18, an organisation advocating for religious freedom. Among those arrested, 10 individuals remain in custody. Arrests were made between 1st June and 17th July with bail amounts ranging from £6,000 to £30,000. The detainees were reportedly subjected to signing commitments to cease Christian activities and attending Islamic re-education sessions upon release. Some were questioned further after release, and one individual lost their job due to intelligence agency intervention. This crackdown coincided with a more aggressive stance by Iranian authorities, which may be a message ahead of the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death in custody.
The escalating number of arrests and affected cities highlights the need for increased attention and advocacy to protect the rights of Christians in Iran.
