'Hijab Enforcers'
Open Doors UK reports that Christians in Iran are facing an intensified crackdown on their freedoms, as the government ramps up arrests and employs “hijab enforcers” to maintain mandatory head coverings for women. The crackdown comes in the lead up to the anniversary of past protests. Arrests of Christians have surged, with detainees often released but forced to sign commitments to halt their Christian activities. Some are even being expelled from the country, while others face repercussions like job loss due to their faith. Women not wearing the hijab are also targeted, as the government hires 400 veiled women to enforce the rule. Those who resist are handed over to the police. This wave of social policing coincides with the previous year’s nationwide protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini due to her improper hijab. Religious minorities, including Christians and Baha’is, are disproportionately affected. Iran ranks eighth on the World Watch List of persecuted countries causing distress among believers.
Please pray for:
Their safety and strength amidst the crackdowns, that they may find courage and endurance to stand firm in their faith.
Comfort and protection for the families of those who have been arrested that they may find solace and support during this challenging time.
Wisdom and discernment for the believers as they navigate difficult decisions, especially for women torn between wearing the hijab and openly expressing their Christian faith. May they find guidance in their choices and experience God's presence in their lives.
