Christian Convert's Prison Struggle
Laleh Saati, a Christian convert and former asylum-seeker, is struggling with her mental health while serving a two-year sentence in Evin Prison for connecting with "Zionist" Christian organizations. Her mother reports that Laleh needs professional psychological support due to the pressure she's facing.
Despite her mother's plea to reduce her sentence, the judge stated she must wait for the appeal result. Laleh, aged 45, was arrested in February and swiftly sentenced by Judge Afshari, who questioned her return from Malaysia, where she sought asylum and was baptized. Her case highlights the risks faced by asylum-seekers engaging in Christian activities abroad when returning to Iran.
Mansour Borji of Article18 emphasizes the potential persecution genuine Christians face upon return to their home countries. Immigration authorities worldwide are urged to reconsider asylum claims of such individuals.
