Update: A Father Mourns
In an update to the August 2023 story “A Father Mourns,” we praise God for answered prayer as Christian convert Mehdi Akbari, known as Yasser, has been released from Evin Prison after nearly five years, as reported by Article 18. Originally sentenced to 10 years, Yasser’s term was reduced after a long-awaited appeal. His imprisonment was marked by profound suffering, including the heartbreaking death of his only son.
Yasser’s release comes just days after the acquittal of Pastor Anooshavan Avedian, another Christian sentenced solely for his faith, signalling what advocates hope is a shift in Iran’s stance on religious freedom. Both cases highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Christian converts in Iran, where over 20 believers remain imprisoned for their faith. Faith organisations worldwide continue to call on Iran to respect its commitments to religious freedom and release all prisoners of conscience.
Please pray:
▪ For healing and comfort for Yasser and his family as they cope with the loss of his son and adjust to life after prison.
▪ For the immediate release of other Christians unjustly imprisoned in Iran and for protection for those who continue to face persecution for their faith.
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3
